Part Time Optical Assistant – Independent Practice
Salary: Up to £28,000 Pro Rata + Incentives
Part Time – Flexible Weekday Hours
At Inspired Recruitment Group, we understand that exploring a new job opportunity can feel like a big step. That’s why we approach every conversation with care, confidentiality, and absolutely no pressure. If you’re an experienced Optical Assistant looking for a fresh start in a supportive, well-established practice, we’re here to help you take that step at your own pace.
We’re working with a family-run, fully private independent practice looking for an experienced Optical Assistant to become a long-term part of their small and friendly team.
This isn’t a high-volume, conveyor-belt environment. The practice takes a much more personal approach to patient care, with hour-long eye examinations, premium eyewear and high-quality lenses.
They’re looking for somebody who enjoys giving patients time and attention, takes pride in their dispensing and is equally comfortable using their own initiative during quieter periods.
The Role
This is a part-time position with genuine flexibility around the working pattern.
They can offer 4 or 5 days per week, inclusive of Saturdays. The practice is happy to consider different arrangements for the right person, including shorter days.
The main requirement is regular Saturday availability, so you’ll need to be comfortable providing consistent Saturday cover.
Rather than being overly rigid about the exact weekday hours, they’re much more interested in finding somebody who fits the team, enjoys the environment and wants to stay and develop with the practice long term.
What You’ll Be Doing
You’ll be involved throughout the patient journey, including:
- Providing a warm, professional and personal patient experience
- Dispensing frames and lenses confidently
- Helping patients choose eyewear that genuinely suits their needs
- Explaining different lens and product options
- Recognising opportunities to recommend and upsell appropriate products
- Building relationships with a loyal private patient base
- Supporting the smooth day-to-day running of the practice
- Using your initiative to identify tasks that need completing
- Learning and adapting to the practice’s systems and procedures
The practice works with premium and niche eyewear brands, alongside high-quality lenses including Nikon and Essilor.
The Practice
This is a small, family-run independent practice with a fully private patient base.
There are two testing rooms and the Optometrists typically see around 8 patients per day, with approximately one hour allocated for eye examinations.
You’ll be joining an established team of around 5–6 people, creating a much more personal working environment than you may find within a large multiple.
Because the practice can have quieter periods, they’re particularly interested in somebody who is naturally proactive.
You won’t be micromanaged or expected to constantly ask what needs doing. Instead, they’re looking for someone who can recognise what needs attention, keep themselves productive and contribute positively to the wider practice.
What They’re Looking For
You’ll ideally already have good experience working within an optical practice and be confident dealing with patients and dispensing.
More importantly, they’re looking for the right attitude and long-term fit.
You’ll need to be:
- Dependable and reliable
- Proactive and comfortable working independently
- Confident communicating with patients
- Commercially aware without being overly sales-driven
- Comfortable recommending and explaining different products
- Receptive to training and learning new ways of working
- Computer literate
- Adaptable and willing to learn new systems
- Happy working as part of a small, close-knit team
- Able to provide regular Saturday cover
- Genuinely interested in finding somewhere you can settle long term
Experience with OPTIX, VisiOffice or Humphrey Visual Field equipment would be useful, although the practice is happy to support somebody willing to learn.
Salary & Benefits
- Up to £28,000 pro rata, depending on experience
- Monthly performance incentives
- Flexible part-time working pattern
- Private, independent working environment
- Premium frames and lens products
Why Consider It?
If you’re looking to move away from a heavily target-driven or high-volume environment, this could offer something very different.
You’ll have the opportunity to work with quality products, longer patient appointments and a close-knit family-run team, while having flexibility around your weekday hours.
Most importantly, they’re not looking for somebody to simply fill a gap.
They want to find someone they can invest in, develop and retain for the long term.
