Optical Lab Manager / Senior Lab Technician
Full Time | 40 Hours per Week | Up to £29,000
Birmingham
YOU MUST HAVE AT LEAST 3 YEARS EXPERIENCE AS AN OPTICAL LAB TECHNICIAN OR YOUR APPLICATION WILL BE REJECTED
We are working with a well-established optical business looking to strengthen its in-house laboratory with an experienced Lab Manager or Senior Lab Technician.
This is not a business looking to phase out its lab. Quite the opposite. The laboratory remains an important part of the operation, and they want someone who can become a long-term member of the team, take ownership and help improve its performance.
The Opportunity
The lab is a busy operation, with the team responsible for glazing , coatings and surfacing. You’ll be working with modern auto-edging equipment alongside the standard machinery you would expect within a professional optical laboratory.
For an experienced manager, the role will involve more than simply keeping production moving. They want somebody who can lead from the front, look at how the laboratory operates and identify ways to make it more efficient and effective.
You’ll take responsibility for areas including:
- Managing the day-to-day running of the optical laboratory
- Glazing and finishing spectacles to a consistently high standard
- Maintaining excellent attention to detail and quality control
- Managing workflow to achieve approximately 100 completed jobs per day across the team
- Monitoring breakages, remakes and associated costs
- Improving efficiency and laboratory processes
- Supporting, developing and potentially training junior team members/apprentices
- Leading by example and creating a productive working environment
- Working closely with the wider optical team to ensure jobs are completed accurately and on time
What Are We Looking For?
Ideally, you will have around three-five years or more of optical laboratory experience and already be working as a Lab Manager, Senior Lab Technician or highly experienced Optical Lab Technician.
You’ll need to be somebody who understands that the small details matter. Accuracy, process, organisation and timekeeping are all important within this role.
Previous management experience would be particularly attractive, but an experienced technician with the right attitude and ambition to step up could also be considered.
Most importantly, the business wants someone looking for long-term stability rather than their next short-term move.
Salary & Benefits
Lab Manager – up to £29,000
Experienced Lab Technician – up to £27,000
You’ll also receive:
- Workplace pension
- Full-time permanent position
- 40 hours per week
- One weekend day required
- Long-term job security within an established optical laboratory
- Potential management development
Interested?
If you’re an experienced Optical Lab Technician who feels you’ve reached the ceiling in your current position, or an established Lab Manager looking for a secure role where you can genuinely influence how a laboratory performs, this could be well worth a conversation.
